چکیده

Enabling linear minimum-mean square error (LMMSE) based estimation of random time-selective channels, Pilot Symbol Assisted Modulation (PSAM) has well documented merits as a fading countermeasure capable of improving bit error rate performance. In this paper, we establish average-rate optimality of PSAM by showing that the insertion of equi-powered and equi-spaced pilot symbols in PSAM transmissions maximizes a tight lower bound of the average channel capacity. Relying on a simple closed form expression of this bound in terms of the LMMSE channel estimator variance, we further design PSAM transmissions with optimal spacing of pilot symbols, and optimal allocation of the transmit-power budget between pilot and information symbols.

Optimal training for block transmissions over doubly selective wireless fading channels

High data rates give rise to frequency-selective propagation, whereas carrier frequency-offsets and mobility-induced Doppler shifts introduce time-selectivity in wireless links. To mitigate the resulting timeand frequency-selective (or doubly selective) channels, optimal training sequences have been designed only for special cases: pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) for time-selective chan...

Optimal training for non-feedback adaptive modulation over Rayleigh fading channels

Time-varying fast fading channels present a major challenge in the design of wireless communication systems. Pilot Symbol Assisted Modulation (PSAM) has been introduced to mitigate the effects of fading and allow coherent demodulation. Our work studies the performance of non-feedback adaptive PSAM scheme over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. A modular method is introduced for computing th...

Pilot Symbol Transmission for Time-Varying Fading Channels: An Information-Theoretic Optimization

We consider the optimal design of pilot-symbolassisted modulation (PSAM) in time-varying flat-fading channels (FFC). The FFC is modeled as an autoregressive Gauss-Markov random process, whose realization is unknown at the transmitter or at the receiver. Our measure of optimality for channel estimation is the rate of information transfer through the channel. The parameters that are available for...

Kalman Filtering for Space-time Coded Transmissions over Frequency-selective Rayleigh Fading Channels

The problem of multichannel estimation for space-time coded transmissions over frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channels is addressed. Under fast fading conditions, receivers employing Kalman filtering and moderate complexity equalization schemes are proposed for both space-time block codes (STBCs) and space-time trellis codes (STTCs). Simulation results of the proposed receivers demonstrate...

Frequency-domain Equalization of Single Carrier Transmissions over Doubly Selective Channels

Wireless communication systems targeting at broadband and mobile transmissions commonly face the challenge of fading channels that are both time and frequency selective. Therefore, design of effective equalization and estimation algorithms for such channels becomes a fundamental problem. Although multi-carrier transmissions demonstrate prominent potential to combat doubly selective fading, seve...
